Marie had started to tune out her daughter as she drove. She didn’t care about Scarlet’s schoolgirl crush, and she definitely wasn’t interested in hearing about some teacher’s girlfriend and her dog. Wait, did I hear that right? The girlfriend has a hearing dog called Peggy? Wasn’t that the name the stupid disabled girl had called her dog after the crash? Marie realised suddenly that she’d already met Scarlet’s fabled Dr Hunter. She must have been the woman who showed up after the crash to rescue the deaf girl.

“So, Scarlet, darling, tell me; what are you going to do about it?”

“What do you mean, mum?”

“Well, you want her, don’t you, darling? Your Dr Hunter?”

“She’s not ‘my’ anything mum. She never was.” Scarlet tried hard to keep the dejection from her voice, but she wasn’t sure she did a very good job of it.

“Oh come on now, darling, buck up. If you want her, why shouldn’t you have her? Does she think she’s too good for you?”

“Honestly, mum, she only ever saw me as one of her students. I know now she’s in a serious relationship.”

“Relationships come and go, darling. That’s why you should wring them for all they’re worth.” Scarlet wasn’t sure whether her mother was talking about the relationship or the person themselves. It wasn’t Marie’s usual MO to leave her man with nothing. She wasn’t a con artist who bled men dry. She just sucked as much as she could out of the relationship without crossing the line into illegal activities.

“She’s just a lecturer, mum. She’s not loaded, I can’t wring any money out of her.”

Marie’s eyes lit up as a plan formed in her mind. But we could wring it out of the university. And if it ruined that teacher’s reputation in the process? So what? She shouldn’t have spoken to me like that after the crash.

“Sex.” Marie blurted into the phone.

“What?! What did you say, mum?”

“That’s what you wanted from her, correct? If it wasn’t money and it wasn’t for her to fix your grades, then it must have been sex.”

Marie’s words startled Scarlet. Fix my grades? Perhaps mum does know about me failing Rhys’ class. Scarlet’s mind started turning in circles. Perhaps I can convince Rhys to fix this mistake for me? Appealing to her as a student didn’t work, but maybe mum’s right, maybe Rhys can be tempted. If I use my feminine wiles on her, perhaps she’ll amend my grade. That’s just a pipe dream though, isn’t it?

She pushed the obvious objectification by her mother aside as the thought began to take root. She briefly wondered why Marie was encouraging her to pursue a relationship with Rhys now, when she’d thought it was such a terrible idea a few weeks ago. The thought was brief though, and Scarlet quickly forgot about it as she began fantasising about how she could kill two birds with one stone. Get Rhys and get her grades back on track. Deep inside she knew it was wrong, but she was desperate to salvage her place at university.
